Q: I have just received the Spring edition of the FPRA quarterly issue, and was reminded about my letter to you regarding one of our tenant’s issues with WiFi. The tenant’s particular issue is with the WiFi generated from the routers in homes. She uses the internet but uses a wired connection and switches her own mobile phone off when at home or not in use. This way she can manage her health issues, but when a neighbour switches WiFi on she can detect it personally within an hour and will feel really ill after two hours. FPRA Chairman Bob Smytherman replies: This is very timely as Sky News had a Dr on talking about the issue. I would be interested to know what resolution, if any, you have reached in your block as I simply don't feel it would be reasonable to deprive leaseholders of access to their own internet provider based on this one leaseholder who may or may not be affected in a detrimental way? Has your environmental health provided a view? As I see it, if this WiFi is providing a 'statuary nuisance' under the Environmental Protection Act it would be for them to take action against the individual or company providing the nuisance. I am not convinced there is the evidence for this but would certainly welcome your council’s view so we can put this to the Government as a wider issue? [Submitted February 2017]
